Unexpected Kindnesses

Today, I got a handwritten condolences note from my regular vet. And, another handwritten note from the 2 emergency vets that worked on Phat with a clay impression of his front paws as a memento.

The fundraiser in me is impressed by their savvy, contacting me at a vulnerable moment with an appropriate level of concern to build my affinity. The part of me that's horrified when I'm referred to as the cats' "Mommy," is a little freaked out that there is now an animal equivalent to the baby handprint.

But, I'm also really, really touched that the vets thought to send this to me. And, really glad to have the prints. We didn't bring Phat home, but chose instead to let the hospital dispose of his remains. I didn't want to remember him as anything less than his badly behaved, gur-juss self. So, my only memento was his collar, which is a bit impersonal, but better for me than a box of ashes on a shelf or a tombstone somewhere in NYC.

But the paw prints are... lovely. Don't be horrified if you see them on my bookshelf. I'm going to keep them forever.

Wow. That's way more heart than I ever give vets credit for having. Not that they're heartless. More like they just have so much to go around and it can get a little thin. You know what I mean. Very thoughtful of them.
