I've made it through 2 of 6 Letterpress printing classes. Letterpress is an exhausting, exacting, thankless motherfucking game for masochists. I fucking hate it so far.
We're been covering a TON of information, and I'm the only one taking notes. I can't totally understand everything I'm being taught as the teacher says it, so when it comes time to do it on my own, I completely fucking lost. I also had the great fortune of pulling a defective set of type for my first project. 2 days, 2 FUCKING DAYS of heavy drawers, and stupid fucking details - check it, load it, fix it, tighten it, loosen it, level it, refix it, repeat, then test to find out it's fucked. Start from scratch. Again, and again, and again.
This may be the first time I've ever thought, "surely there is someone I can pay to do this," in a class. I'm hoping as we get out of 19th c. technology that my luck will improve. But, I'm not having fun.
I have to come up with 3 designs by next week. I need to do at least one lead type (holy fuck me), and one in a software program that I do not know (somehow sounds easier). And, if I want to print invitations on these fuckers, September is going to fucking kill me.
Not. Fun.
Everyone in my class is a graphic designer. I'm getting my ass kicked. One girl, visiting from Tampa for the international Stationery Show and interning at an ad agency, offered to give me free design so that I could keep up.
Sort of want to cry. Wish me luck.
