Thank God for Modern Technology

Ok, so years ago, my credit card offered me a program where they notify about any changes to my credit report for $5/month. Seemed like such a waste of money. Today I got an email from that company about the balance on my Macy's card.

Um, I don’t have a Macy’s card.

Last time I was in Herald Square, my checkout girl “looked up my account” to get a coupon for me. I told her I didn’t have an account, but she found me anyway. Then she had me sign for my coupon, and wrote down her associate number to get credit. And, again, I told her I didn’t have an account, didn’t want an account, and was assured, that this wasn’t an account, just a coupon.

Later that same day someone got a new Coach bag. It just wasn’t me.

So far, Macy’s has been very helpful closing the account and getting me info on how to report the fraud. Tonight, I’ll check my other accounts, call the credit bureaus to report the fraud, and find the receipts for the 2 Macy’s purchases I made that day using my American Express. And, in a few days I’ll go over all of this again with the Macy’s fraud department. I gave them that little sneak’s associate number, but I’m going to check it against the receipt I was given just to be sure.

And, now I’m really glad that I paid that $5 a month. Money well spent for peace of mind at Xmas in NYC.
