Mangosteens Take Manhattan

I have been dying to try one of these ever since the NYTimes travel review a few years back. I wrote notes to myself to look for them in India. I talk about them with my friends the chefs. So, imagine my surprise when my local Whole Foods had them on display.

For $40 a pound. Individually wrapped, and taped to prevent pilfering. Under the watchful eye of a security guard.

I bought one, shared it with Bee and Dr. Boy, and the the consensus is that the "queen of tropical fruit" is completely overrated. I think it tastes like Japanese Plums (or whatever those little yellow fruits are that grow in NOLA backyard trees). Dr. Boy summed it up as a plum taste in the body of a lichee.

Totally skippable. Even at $40 a pound.

XOXO,

M
